January 26th, 2008 — Application, Quotations
This semester I have the privilege of listening to several MP3’s for my Senior Seminar class. The first three are from Howard Hendricks and the last three are from Josh McDowell. Today, I listened to Hendricks speak on finding the balance between our professional life and spiritual life. I thought I would share some quotations from it.
Referring to serving in the church: “There’s no limit to what you can do when you don’t care who gets the credit.”
Referring to the disciples response when they heard the request of James and John to have priority in the kingdom: “The first thing that we tend to recognize in another person is our own weakness.”
Follow me as I follow Christ - 1 Cor. 11: “There is no question whether men are following you. The question is whether you are following Christ.”
“What made Caleb and Joshua different from the rest? They saw something more than the giants – they saw God.”
You can download many messages from these two men and many others at Discipleship Library.
January 22nd, 2008 — Personal
I knew I was back in the dorms when a guy walked in my room wearing candy cane pajama pants and a “Calvinism: this shirt chose me/Armininism: I chose this shirt” shirt, eating a banana, and clutching C.J. Mahaney’s Humility under his arm at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Nothing can quite compare to living in the dorms during the college years. Although the potential for foolish living abounds, there is also a great potential for spiritual growth and iron-sharpening (Prov. 27:17).
The semester started yesterday and we are all going through “syllabus shock,” which is merely a title to describe the feeling you get when you know a dump truck is coming to run you over, but there is nothing you can do about it. Joe Keller’s cure for this condition is “Some how it all gets done. I don’t know how, but some how it all gets done.” So along with the rain that we are getting this week comes the homework. But each syllabus is just another opportunity to trust the Lord and in His sovereignty.
January 17th, 2008 — Application
As I have been cleaning my room getting ready for this semester, I found a sheet of paper from a meeting last semester. I didn’t make it to the meeting, but my friend gave me the handout. I’m sure these things are credited to someone, I just don’t know who. But it was a good reminder for me and it coincides well with what some of you have been learning in Ecclesiastes.
